Uh-Oh.

Um. I mean....Happy Fourth!

(Insert photo of fireworks display. On second thought, skip it. That's what everyone's gonna do. You know what fireworks look like, right?)

So, I'm cleaning up...gotta cover the grill before it gets dark and I can no longer tell the front from the back...(don't know what difference this makes, but there you have it) food's been consumed and I'm a hot, sticky mess with (probably) thousands of bug bites and (probably) a minimum of a dozen ticks crawling all over me.

Yeah, the great outdoors can bite me. (Pun intended) There's a reason we live in houses, people.

Mystery of the day: Someone brought me this. They spied it under the coffee table:

My response? "That doesn't belong under the coffee table. Uh. That can't be good."

Connor: "It's obviously used to hold something up."

Me: "Ya think? I mean...has anything fallen down since we've moved? Is something about to fall down because it's missing this vital piece of supportive technology? How would we know? Where do we begin the search? I've never even seen that piece before...and we've moved four times already. Do you want your buns toasted, or not?"

Connor: "Well, we could....what? Wait...what? What the hell?"

Me: "Watch your language, mister. No toasty buns for you."

Connor: "Yeah, like your language is squeaky clean..."

Me: "HEY. Do as I say, not as I do. No, wait....that won't work here. Don't curse....'specially when there's other people around. You're making me look bad. Now, go prop something up with that thing. It's freaking me out. I've got people's buns to toast."

Happy Independence Day-

Happy Independence Day to you as well. That sounds like quite a mystery oyu have there--hopefully nothing tumbles.

Looks like a sofa leg. Or maybe a leg to a recliner?

Happy fourth and hope your new 3 legged table doesn't fall over unanncounced.

I saw your title and the first words out of my mouth (seriously, without even thinking about it) was "Uh oh". As in, oh-no-what-went-down-THIS-time.

("What went down?" Since when do I say that?)

So, um, what was that thing any way? I looked like a drawer handle screwed into a block of wood....

And I TOTALLY agree about the bugs...we should all stay indoors and exterminate until our fingers ache...with the exception of butterflies and such. They don't bite. Flies can go though. And ticks. Ticks creep me out. I'm way off topic huh?

Happy fourth!

Happy Independence Day Kathryn. We still have about two hours of the 4th left. I can hear the neighbors all around shooting off fireworks and I'm just hoping none of them land on my roof!

Looks like an extension to a piece of furniture that wasn't high enough. You know....like a booster.

Go Look for the lopsided piece of furniture that resembles the leaning tower of pisa and stick it back where it belongs.

Happy Independence Day! (And enjoy the extended weekend!)

It looks like an adjustable table leg to me.

Or some pirate's falsie. Did you invite any pirates to your bbq?

Lauren said...

Yeah... I got nothing for the standing up/prop/leg mystery device. You could probably use it to scratch all your bug bites though... it has a handle.

Vince said...

It must have been a good party if you are picking up bits of furniture.
It looks like the leg of one of those pointless little coffee-tables that you have to pack with useless tomes on interior design to bring a cup within reach or your foot high enough to be comfy. So why not solve the problem and knock off the other three then replace with the books under the thing.

I'm so glad to know that mine isn't the only house where mysterious objects just randomly appear! Another thing that makes me feel better? The conversation between you and Conner - 'cause yeah we've had the same one over here. Happy 4th!

Jerry said...

It's a conversation piece -- and it worked!

I love the fact you didn't post fireworks, you non-conformist!

And what the hell was that thing ?(oops, sorry...apologies to the old ladies and kids reading this) Connor has a similar vocab to my Sean. You're right about it making us look bad, so I'm trying to get him to clean up his %#$&ing act.

I actually know what this is! It holds up the frame underneath your bed! Happy Fifth!

TC said...

Looks like my couch leg? HAPPY 4th!!! or 5th as the case may be!!

You gotta get that awards page up and running Kathryn, cause I've just awarded you another one on my blog. This is the "I Love Your Blog" award and it's been awarded because...well cuz I love your blog!!! Please stop by and pick it up when you are in the neighborhood!

Hope you had a great weekend! I'm finally back in the blogosphere and fully intending to start being consistent. Doesn't that sound convincing?
Good luck finding whatever that thing is supposed to be attached to. I think it may just need to go live in a junk drawer.

Heather said...

I also hope you had a great weekend. At first I had no clue what it was, I sure hope it wasn't super important.

Slamdunk: So far, so good. Nothing's teetering...nothing's wobbling. It's a real Independence Day mystery, I tell ya!

J9: Nope...and nope. It's unfinished wood...with nothing on top to signify what it was attached to. Incredibly odd, right?

sage: Ha. Nothing's showing signs of instability so far...unless you count yours truly.

kathryn said...

Oddyoddyo13: So, um...I've no idea what that thing was/is. It's still sitting on my desk. It's mocking me. If I listen carefully, I can hear it say, (Snickering) "You have no clue, do you? And ya know what? You'll never know...and it'll always bug you. Oh, and speaking of bugs...there's one in your hair."

Alicia: Happy 4th to you too, sweetie! I hope your roof remained firework-free...it sure is a noisy night...isn't it?

A Daft Scots Lass: Ha! Of course, that's the first thing I thought! Looking at everything sideways...and trying to discern a lean. I got nothing. Damned if I know.

kathryn said...

Runnergirl: Happy Fourth to you too! Ah! I FORGOT ALL ABOUT THE PIRATES! They arrived and left together...and I never DID get a count on all artificial appendages....this mystery may just be solved! (Great answer, btw)

Lauren: Ha! A bug-bite scratcher. You and Runnergirl are on a roll! Two woman after my own heart...totally thinking OUTSIDE THE BOX. Love it!

Vince: Yeah...either it was a great party, or my furniture is falling apart before my (and my guest's) eyes. I'll go with the former, please. And I'm not a pointless-coffee-table kinda gal...if it serves no point, then why should I have to keep dusting it? It would be outta here!

kathryn said...

Gigi: Don't you hate it when strange objects that obviously are meant to hold other things up just magically appear, as if out of nowhere? And what's with these kids cursing? They sure as hell didn't get that from me....

Jerry: Ha! A conversation piece that is continuing to make me very uncomfortable. Is there a site (possibly entitled "WTH IS THIS?") where one can post photos?

Alan W. Davidson: I KNEW you'd appreciate my deviation from the norm....could almost hear your voice in my head! I don't know what the hell that thing was. Still is. I can mail it to you...maybe you can have it analyzed? As for these foul-mouthed f*&#ing kids...what are ya gonna do?? I don't know where they get it from.

kathryn said...

dailyseeking: I thought of that! But alas, all of them are in place...and ours seem to be metal. So, the mystery continues. Hope you had a great holiday!

TC: Ha! Actually, Happy 7th, today...(I'm a bit late)...but whatever. Couch leg? No. Though, I wish...'cause then I could stop wondering what it actually IS. I'd like to say this is all a deliberate game on my part but it really ISN'T!

Alicia: Oh, sweetie! Thank you sooo much! I really appreciate you're thinking of me! YES...I totally need to get back to that awards page...I've got everything neatly placed in folders...it's just the semantics of ID-ing it properly. I promise I'll get to it soon. Thanks again!

kathryn said...

Nance: Sounds good to me! Another suggestion totally outside the box...gotta love it!

Maureen@IslandRoar: You'll know when I know, sweets. For now, it sits on my desk....daily mocking me for my ignorance. One day, when I least expect it...it'll hit me. I'll have my soon-to-be-infamous "AHA!" moment.

I hope.

John McElveen: Hey, it's as good a guess as any! And one of the more imaginative ones, at that!

kathryn said...

Jen: Yes, you sound totally convincing, sweetie. I hope your weekend was fab and that you've been doing well. I've missed your sharp wit and keen ability to thoroughly entertain!

Heather: Ya know what? How important can it be, if I still don't know where it belongs? I'll let it mock me for a few more days...and then I'm throwing it into the junk drawer. End of story!
