Earth Hour 2009

On Saturday night, March 28th from 8:30-9:30pm, the boys and I are gonna be part of something BIG:

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.

Da boys are ambivalent about this…but I am determined to show them how we three can make a difference. I can pretty much imagine how it’ll go down:

Kathryn, 8pm: “BOYS! 30-MINUTE WARNING!! LIGHTS OFF IN 30 MINUTES. THAT’S THIRTY MINUTES!”

Silence.

Kathryn, 8:28pm: “OKAY! I’M NOT KIDDING HERE! DON’T MAKE ME THROW THE SWITCH IN THE GARAGE…YOU KNOW I WILL!!”

Connor (12): “I’m in the middle of a GAME.”

Taylor (16): “I’m on the PHONE.”

(Kathryn makes dramatic noise like she’s heading for the garage to hit the circuit breaker)

Taylor & Connor: “FINE!”

And, the house goes dark. Candles are lit, bathing each room in a predetermined soft, glow-y ambience…perfect for pleasant conversation and possibly a rousing game of Crazy-Eights.

Taylor will head for the fridge for a snack.

Kathryn: “No! Don’t open the fridge! We’re supposed to be conserving here.”

Taylor: “But, I’m hungry.”

Kathryn: “You’re always hungry. Suck it up for an hour.”

Connor: “Well, what are we gonna do? I mean…just sit here?”

Kathryn: “We could….I don’t know, maybe talk?”

Taylor: “I have nothing to say. Do we have any Hostess Cupcakes?”

Kathryn: (Sighs) “Well, how about a board game?”

Connor: “Mom…what are we? Four??”

Kathryn: “Oh, c’mon! I’m asking you for one stinkin’ hour! Do it for the Earth!”

Connor: “FINE. But, I get to choose the game…and in one hour, I’m out of here.”

Taylor: “Ditto.”

Kathryn: “Awwwww. I knew you’d come through in the end. Now, who wants a twizzler?”

(I tried for several hours to upload this clip. Evidently, blogger’s having “technical difficulties”…please check it out. It’s totally worth it.)

Why do they have to play Bob Dylan-esque hippie music to that video. That alone makes me not want to do it. Then I think of all the alpha males like my dad that would laugh at this & again why should I suffer if they're not going to. Kinda makes me think you're some sort of sucker if you do it. Lastly I'm thinking of all the off gases being emitted from the candles burning b/c of course once you do one p.c. thing there's always someone to say something even more p.c. about it. Ugh. Anyway, I'll consider doing it how's that?

Huh. But how do you REALLY feel about it, JH? For me, it's more about the example I'll set for the boys...being a part of something bigger. Hey, if the Eiffel Tower is going dark in support of this, I figure that's good enough for me.
