Roll To Me

Look into your heart, pretty baby-
Is it aching with some nameless need?
Is there something wrong and you can’t put your finger on it?
Right then… roll to me.

I don’t think I’ll ever tire of this song. It never fails to send me back through time to my favorite season…and it’s summer once again.

Here’s my mental snapshot: Sitting by the edge of the pool in the evening…legs making lazy swirls in the cool blue water…gin & tonic with a wedge of key lime by my side. Yummy. So much tastier with the key lime…I’m glad I thought of it. My eyes are closed and I hear the song of frogs and crickets mingling with the steady hum of the pool filter. I’m assuming the frogs are EATING the crickets, actually…a surefire sign that I’ve been spending too much time surrounded by boys lately. I can feel the gentle breeze on my skin and for a split second, time stands utterly still. It’s one of those rare moments of solitude and serenity, the latter only existing because I can no longer see the bottom of the pool and all the debris that’s waiting to be sucked up, so for the moment there’s nothing to do but SIT…and BE.

The spell is usually broken by one of several things:

  1. I hear an audible “PLOP!”-sound…, a definite signal to remove your legs from the water as quickly as possible
  2. The pool pump kicks off and the house goes completely dark (I’ll let you figure that one out for yourself)
  3. I hear the phone ringing (“Heaven forbid someone actually stop what they’re doing and answer it!” I think, as I chide myself for not remembering to bring the cordless out with me.
  4. OR (and this is my favorite) I suddenly hear someone yell “COWABUNGAAAAA!!!” as Taylor and Connor come barreling around the corner, cannonballing into the water with a torrential *SPLASH*!!

And life resumes its usual warp speed.
